Reviews and Teacher Feedback... Old MacDonald may have the blues, but you certainly will not when you are teaching these new pieces.... A set of 12, Rebekah manages to re-write many of the classics such as Jingle Bells, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Three Blind Mice and Pop Goes the Weasel in a variety of styles from the blues to Latin American dance groove, giving fresh life to these music education standards.... Old MacDonald Had the Blues is a wonderful collection of pieces that are fresh, interesting and engaging.... Rémi Lefebvre, Arabesque Newsletter of the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers' Association If student demand is any indication of quality, this music “re-telling” of classic folk songs is already destined for success! Shortly after receiving a copy of “Old MacDonald Had the Blues” from its composer, Rebekah Maxner, a student asked me what it was. I played him a sampling of some of the pieces and he’s been begging to take it home and play them himself ever since.... Natalie Wickham's Music Matters Blog - read the full review Thanks so much for Old MacDonald – I have a little girl who may stay with piano for another year or two because of it! Evelyn Keddy, RMT, piano teacher, Nova Scotia …one of your pieces has been a big hit in my studio and with many of the parents. A student learned Twinkle, Twinkle Superstar and performed it for the Music Festival as well as for his CNCM Recital Exam. The reaction from his audience – both other students and adults/parents - was quite remarkable, and even emotional. Tenley Dyck, RMT, piano teacher, Manitoba From the PrefaceThe collection is based on songs children have been singing for ages. In choosing the pieces, I wanted to be able to twist the music as well as the titles. To my ear, The Wheels on the Bus was just begging to be set to Ragtime, while Jack and Jill sounded like a California beach groove just waiting to happen. Familiarity with the traditional songs will help students get the humor of the arrangements. To complete the artistic experience, Holly Carr created the delightful cover art and sketches, which invite children to play their music in full color. From a pedagogical point of view, the collection offers a first-rate introduction to the rhythms and technical characteristics of today’s popular styles. Piano students can try their hand at Jazz, Blues, Soft Rock, Ragtime, Latin, and more. These popular styles are part of everyday life and should be included in every piano student’s repertoire as you help them establish a strong foundation in music. |
